Leo XIV announces lung surgery following discovery of nodule. Pope Leo XIV, 71, unexpectedly announced during Sunday's Angelus prayer in St. Peter's Square that he will undergo lung surgery in the coming days. Doctors discovered a nodule in one of his lungs during recent examinations. The Pope said it was detected at a very early stage. The Vatican said the operation would take place early next week at Rome's Agostino Gemelli Hospital, with an expected hospital stay of one week. No cancer diagnosis has been announced, and it remains unclear whether the nodule is benign or malignant.

US Bishop prohibits celebration facing the Lord (ad orientem). On October 2, Bishop Jeffrey Walsh, 60, of Gaylord, Michigan, issued a decree restricting the celebration of the Mass towards the Lord. It takes effect on October 15. Under the new rules, all Sunday and holy day Masses must be read - like a talk or show - facing the people. On weekdays, no more than two Masses per parish may be celebrated ad orientem, and only after consultation with the parish council and appropriate catechesis. Weddings, funerals, and other Masses with congregations must also be celebrated facing the people. Masses according to the 1962 Missal are exempt. The bishop invokes paragraph 299 of the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM), claiming it favors celebration versus populum. However, the text of GIRM 299 does NOT require Mass to be celebrated facing the people. EXORCIST SUES FOR DEFAMATION Fr. Carlos Martins is suing an assistant to Fr. Chad Ripperger for defamation, after the assistant (Kyle Clement) essentially called Fr. Martins a fraud. Fr. Martins is an exorcist ad actum, meaning he is commissioned by bishops on a case-by-case basis to perform exorcisms in their diocese. This has been confirmed in writing by Fr. Martins' religious superior, and confirmed by Fr. Martins himself. For whatever reason, Clement claimed in 2024 that Martins is NOT an exorcist. Fr.
