US Bishop prohibits celebration facing the Lord (ad orientem). On October 2, Bishop Jeffrey Walsh, 60, of Gaylord, Michigan, issued a decree restricting the celebration of the Mass towards the Lord. It takes effect on October 15. Under the new rules, all Sunday and holy day Masses must be read - like a talk or show - facing the people. On weekdays, no more than two Masses per parish may be celebrated ad orientem, and only after consultation with the parish council and appropriate catechesis. Weddings, funerals, and other Masses with congregations must also be celebrated facing the people. Masses according to the 1962 Missal are exempt. The bishop invokes paragraph 299 of the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM), claiming it favors celebration versus populum. Pope Leo XIV, 71, unexpectedly announced during Sunday's Angelus prayer in St. Peter's Square that he will undergo lung surgery in the coming days. Doctors discovered a nodule in one of his lungs during recent examinations. The Pope said it was detected at a very early stage. The Vatican said the operation would take place early next week at Rome's Agostino Gemelli Hospital, with an expected hospital stay of one week. Since I can't comment on en.news, I'll just say that no one has made a claim about the size of the Pope's nodule. No one ever said it was 3mm. Calling it a nodule might indicate that it is less than 3 cm. But there are no reports concerning its exact size.
