It can be liberating for persons in such situations to be in a setting where their ‘irregularity’ is acknowledged, not relativised.” He cited the allegedly “many” faithful he knows who seek a blessing at Communion Sunday after Sunday, aware they cannot receive the sacrament. Such prolonged “sacramental exile” can prepare a homecoming: “Christ gave us his rigorous commandments to educate us and to liberate us from ourselves.”

Today, Leo XIV has appointed Monsignor Paolo Andreolli, until now auxiliary bishop of Belém, as the new Bishop of Ponta de Pedras, Brazil. Born in Italy in 1972, Andreolli is a Xaverian missionary who has worked in Brazil's Amazon region since 2007. He was consecrated auxiliary bishop of Belém on April 15, 2023. Footage of that consecration shows a ceremonial pagan gesture toward the end of the liturgy inside the cathedral. A man raises and shakes a ritual tool, a maracá-like rattle, over the newly consecrated bishop, performing an Indigenous-style ritual blessing. A globe representing the Earth is also presented. Leo XIV has written from hospital to the Amoris Laetitia conference. He will read the final document soon and urges the bishops to share “what you have lived and received, and to continue proclaiming the Gospel with families, drawing on the richness of Amoris Laetitia.” Due to his surgery, the conference's final document will not be published until Leo XIV has worked on it. He will offer his reflections "in due course". Meanwhile, Leo XIV is recovering as expected. He underwent the blood tests and X-ray scheduled following the surgery and the results confirm a normal normal postoperative course. Rev Michael Andrade of the parish Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Clovis, California, in the Diocese of Fresno, and his vicar Joseph Klinge performed and danced in cassocks during the parish’s Annual Derby Dance Auction on May 2. The event, held in the parish school auditorium, featured the song “Livin’ on a Prayer” and an Elvis Presley impersonation by Rev Andrade.
